BANGKOK Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports says the first Michelin Guide Bangkok, due to be published in December, will help to boost the country’s food tourism, while adding value to Thai restaurants that are awarded Michelin stars.

Tourism Authority of Thailand entered  into a partnership with Michelin Travel Partner, last week, to publish a Bangkok edition of the prestigious Michelin Guide.

Tourism and Sports Minister, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, said the launch would allow local people and tourists to experience the delicious taste of Thai food in many settings.

“The Michelin Guide’s reliable rating system will also encourage Thailand’s restaurant industry to improve its food quality and service.”

Bangkok will be the focus of the first Thailand based Michelin Guide, with restaurants  from other Thai destinations to be included in later editions.

The Michelin Guide Bangkok will be published in Thai and English edition and will be available in print and digital versions.

The Michelin Guides have been published in Europe for more than a century and now cover 28 countries. Reviews are put together by anonymous inspectors.

A restaurant is judged for quality of ingredients, flair and skill in preparation and combining flavour,; the chef’s personality as revealed through the cuisine, value for money and consistency of standards.

It comes with a hefty price tag. The Thai Cabinet approved a USD4.1 million budget, in February for Tourism Authority of Thailand to underwrite the Michelin project  through a five-year contract (2017 to 2021). There is a release clause halfway through the contract’s timeframe.
