LAMPHUN Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports has outlined measures to develop Lamphun as a priority tourist destination in North Thailand.
Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said Lamphun has potential to grow its tourism industry as part of a wider cluster of destinations in the northern provinces.
The main emphasis is on domestic tourism, although there has been a surge in Chinese visitors to the north.
In the past, Lamphun was promoted as one of Thailand’s ‘hidden gems” a campaign that identified 12 emerging destinations across the country. Now the emphasis is on linking it to other destinations that have cultural links with the former Lanna kingdom.
“The Lanna cluster includes five provinces in North Thailand — Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang and Phayao. It will help the country boost revenue in tourism under the Lanna experience concept,” the minister said.
To boost Lamphun’s tourism, the ministry has outlined four key strategies in an effort to spread revenue to the secondary destination.
Develop tourism routes under the Ultimate Lanna Experience campaign to create content as “Faith in local Lanna” presenting temples dating back to the foundation of Hang Chat district in Lampang – Pasang district in Lamphun – Mueang district in Lamphun – Mueang district in Chiang Mai – Jom Thong district in Chiang Mai.
