BANGKOK Thais will honour His Majesty the King’s 65th birthday, Friday 28 July; a new annual holiday for the nation.
All government offices, banks and businesses will close. However, shops will remain open and there is no ban on the sale of alcohol.
Rama X, King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun has reigned in Thailand since 13 October 2016, following the death of his father, the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
The King was born on 28 July 1952. He is the only son of the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and HM the Queen Sirikit.
In 1972, at the age of 20, he was declared Crown Prince. He will be formally crowned later this year. He is the 10th monarch of the Chakri Dynasty and at the age of 64, is the oldest Thai monarch to ascend to the throne.
The 5 December annual holiday to mark the birthday of the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej will remain a commemorative public holiday.
