Guyana secures $18 million loan to build tourist hospital

Guyana's president says his government has secured an $18 million line of credit from India to build a new hospital in the South American country.

President Bharrat Jagdeo says that the new hospital will offer specialized procedures such as organ transplants and cosmetic surgeries.Jagdeo says that he hopes the hospital will attract foreigners looking for inexpensive medical care abroad, a practice known as medical tourism. Guyana now has few medical specialists.

The president says construction will start this year and end in early 2014.He says an Indian company will build the hospital and Indian medical specialists will operate it.Jagdeo made the announcement late Friday after returning from India.
