Taiwan pulls out all stops in Malaysian tourism drive

Taiwan is running a yearlong high-profile media campaign aimed at boosting visitor numbers from Malaysia to 320,000 this year, according to the Tourism Bureau.

The campaign got underway March 10 with the unveiling of an innovative display inside the pedestrian tunnel at Kuala Lumpur landmark Petronas Twin Towers. The walls feature glossy images of Taiwanese food and cultural activities, and the ceiling pictures of sky lanterns.

In addition, the bureau took the opportunity to launch its latest international tourism campaign, Taiwan The Heart of Asia, during the event.

Around 350,000 people pass through this tunnel every month making it one of the busiest thoroughfares in the capital, a bureau official said. We believe this is the perfect location for encouraging affluent locals to visit Taiwan.

The bureau tunnel event follows a similar promotion last October on Kuala Lumpur's monorail. The successful campaign generated wide-ranging local media coverage and is believed to have helped lift visit numbers to Taiwan.

Bureau statistics indicate that 285,734 Malaysians visited Taiwan last year. This represents a 71.11 percent surge from the year before, and is the largest increase among all countries and regions.
