International Tourism Conference inaugurated in Sri Lanka capital

Sri Lanka inaugurated the International Tourism Conference of the South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific regions organized by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in Colombo today.

The UNWTO is holding the 23rd Joint Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for South Asia and the UNWTO Commission for East Asia and the Pacific at the Hilton Hotel in Colombo, from 24-26 March 2011.

Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa inaugurated the three-day conference under the theme 'Mainstreaming Tourism in the Media' with the participation of 154 member counties and 400 agents of the World Tourism Organization.

The Ministry of Economic Development says that the conference is an opportunity for the country to display its development in tourism sector to the world.

Sri Lanka is one of the 160 countries having membership in the UNWTO. The Organization also has more than 350 Affiliate Members, which represent the private sector, educational institutions, tourism associations, and local tourism authorities.
