Popular gap year destinations in Africa and Asia are attracting a growing number of travellers from the UK, it has been claimed.
According to ABTA – The Travel Association, many of the countries most commonly associated with voluntary work on a gap year abroad are proving "increasingly popular" with Brits seeking unique experiences.
"The biggest growth is probably in Africa. There are lots of different countries there from Malawi to Namibia and lots of southern African countries - South Africa has seen a huge growth in recent years," a spokeswoman said.
She went on to suggest that while Zambia and Botswana have also seen visitor numbers soar in recent times, there are also a range of Asian countries that never fail to attract foreigners.
Cambodia and Laos, which provide gap year travellers with a wealth of voluntary work opportunities, were just two destinations pinpointed by the ABTA.Writing for the Daily Mail earlier this month, veteran BBC reporter Michael Buerk described Cambodia as the "most compelling" Asian country to visit.
