Malaysia Airlines will be canceling direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Kaohsiung in October, Chen Shen-shang, director-general of Kaohsiung City's Tourism Bureau, said Tuesday.
The carrier currently runs one flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kaohsiung per day.Ma Yi-long, chairman of the Kaohsiung Association of Travel Agents, has asked Premier Wu Den-yih to help recruit another airline that can service the Kuala Lumpur-Kaohsiung route.
Malaysia Airlines was not available for comment, and neither were authorities from Kaohsiung International Airport.Chen said Malaysia's flagship carrier made the sudden decision after reassessing the economic benefits of its existing services. The airlines is preparing to replace its aging planes with new aircraft models.
The city is trying to avoid any negative impacts on local tourism. Kaohsiung City Government is already lobbying two other airlines, Air Asia and China Airlines, to carry the route, Chen said.Right now, Air Asia provides direct flights from Malaysia to Taoyuan International Airport in northern Taiwan.
