Late last month Japan’s tourism leaders held a three-day exhibition in Tokyo, encouraging locals and foreigners that Japan is safe for travel.
Hoping to pick up the 60 percent fall in arrivals since the quake earlier this year, according to Japan’s Association of Travel Agents, the country hosted its annual JATA Tourism Forum and Travel Showcase from 28 September, NTD Television reported.
“There are some parts that got a bad reputation because of the damage, causing this situation, but every part of Japan is collecting and sending out data to say that it is safe, so I think you do not need to worry, especially the Tohoku area,” Japan Travel and Tourism Association’s Masao Shimakura said.
“Us Japanese, and the people in northeastern Japan, will continue to 'cheer up' ourselves.”
Shining new light or unexplored and old destinations across the country, Japan Tourism Agency’s Hironori Kobayashi told the station that sporting events could play a part in the country’s recovery.
“One part is not recovered yet, but we can host sports event, also big events,” Mr Kobayashi explained.
“On October, we will have the World Gymnastics Championship, in November we have the Volleyball World Cup, next week there is F-1 Japanese Grand Prix.
“We hope people from around the world will come to Japan, so we can show that Japan has not really changed.”
