Malaysia is proposing the possibility of forging regional cooperation to widen the scope of the country's tourism industry through cooperation with Singapore, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin

He said he had been given a detailed briefing by the Singapore Tourism Board on Singapore's strategy to turn the island into a first class tourism destination began several years ago.

"This is rather special to me. We have discussed today on the possibility of forging regional collaboration or cooperation in efforts to widen the scope of tourism in our country in cooperation with Singapore," he told Malaysian journalists after visiting the Tuas South Incineration Plant, here.

Muhyiddin cited cooperation in the development of Iskandar Malaysia which had already started between Khazanah Nasional and Temasek.

"I had suggested just now that a new opportunity is to look at how Singapore can participate in the development of Desaru as suggested by Khazanah.

"Secondly, the the field of maritime tourism through cruise ships or sailing, which to me is rather new and interesting," said Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister.

Muhyiddin is here on a two-day working visit to the republic.

He suggested that the working group which was set up in the field of tourism could continue their efforts in getting the involvement of the private sector.

He said if there was a need for the government to be involved in providing the infrastructure, this was something that should be looked into.
