The Medical Tourism Industry in Malaysia is in the pink of health, and has been growing at an exponential rate over the past few years. The Government has been supporting the industry with significant investment in many areas, including the refurbishment of existing hospitals, building and equipping new hospitals, expansion of the number of polyclinics, and improvements in training and expansion of tele-health. More hotel/resort spas are opening across the country, increasing from 108 outlets in 2009 to 130 in 2010, as the demand for these resorts has soared.
Today, Malaysia has exceptional facilities to cater to medical visitors, and some of Malaysia’s best private hospitals are being promoted in significant markets. Some of the top hospitals in Malaysia for Medical Tourism include Penang Adventist Hospital in Jalan Burma, Twin Towers Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Institute Jantung Negara National Heart Institute, Prince Court Medical Centre and the International Specialist Eye Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
Though it is a niche market, medical visitors spend more than leisure travellers, stay longer and also tend to become repeat visitors, returning at least once to experience the destination for a holiday.
A large number of tourists are coming to Malaysia from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East and USA for cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures. Today, many health insurance companies do not provide any coverage for these procedures.
Hence, patients have started looking out for affordable care at destinations which are not expensive and which have quality healthcare provisions. To cater to this segment, Malaysia has developed its facilities in cosmetic and plastic surgery, and enhanced the quality of treatment.
In Malaysia, one can have various cosmetic surgery procedures conducted, ranging from a face lift, brow lift, rhinoplasty, to liposuction or a tummy tuck, all at reasonable costs and under the care of experienced surgeons. The cost of these procedures is nearly half or even one-third of the costs of the same procedures in the USA and Europe.
Hospitals and healthcare facilities in Malaysia offer a wide array of procedures and services for medical travellers, which include Endocrinology, ENT, General & Cosmetic Dentistry, Health rejuvenation packages, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology and Paediatrics, among others.
