Malaysia plans major coastal tourism development

A company in Malaysia has unveiled plans to create a major new tourism development along the coast at Sepang, in the state of Selangor.

Malaysian news agency Bernama reported that Sepang Goldcoast Sdn Bhd’s plan includes a new cruise terminal, water theme park, threeand four-star hotels, factory outlets and resort homes. The company has been entrusted to develop a 1,870-hectare area of seafront land stretching 22km from Bagan Lalang to Tanjung Sepat, in the southwest of Selangor.

Sepang is already home to both Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Malaysia’s motor racing hub, Sepang International Circuit, which hosted last weekend’s Formula One Grand Prix. “At present, we have only developed less than 5% of the land area allocated, and so, there is plenty of potential for us to grow and help the country’s tourism industry,” the company’s Vice President for Hospitality, Retail & Property Management, Darren Saw told Bernama in an interview.

Sepang Goldcoast has already created one hotel in the area - the Golden Palm Tree Resort & Spa - and the company expects to launch the resort homes later this year. Proposals for the cruise terminal, water park and other hotels will be submitted to authorities for approval, Saw said.

He added that his company is also proposing that a highway be built from the KLIA to the coast, to reduce travelling time to the area. “We believe that good amenities and exciting activities will attract people to this area,” Saw said.
