Healthcare tourism revenue in Malaysia charted a whopping RM511.2mil last year, leaping 34.9% from 2010.Malaysian health minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai expected revenue from health tourism to reach the RM600 million (150 million euro) mark this year.
Minister said that the number of patients increased, especially from the United Kingdom, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, United States of America, China and Hong Kong.Liow said an increase in the number of new members in the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) would also help ensure the revenue target was met.
The minister said, only 35 hospitals were initially registered with the MHTC to promote medical tourism but last year, it increased to 49.“Today, another 14 hospitals joined MHTC, bringing the total number to 63, of which 54 are hospitals and nine, ambulatory care facilities” added Liow.
