Legazpi City — The Association of Southeast Nations has decided to hold its first tourism workshop on Climate Change here in September, Undersecretary Daniel Corpuz said.
“The association also appointed the Philippines Department of Tourism as the lead coordinator of the workshop,” he told reporters in a briefing after opening the First Philippine Tourism Conference on Climate Change Adaptation last week at Oriental Hotel.
Corpuz said the ASEAN made the decision in its meeting last January in Menado, Indonesia.
ASEAN is composed of Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam.
Corpuz tourism regional director Maria Ravanilla to prepare the workshop plans.
“Since climate change has an impact on tourism, which is an indispensable tool for economic growth, we must find ways to address this global menace,” he said.
Former senator and environment secretary Heherson Alvarez delivered the keynote address in his capacity as Climate Change commissioner.
He said tourism is a stakeholder being a driver of the economy.
