Oil spill affecting Florida tourism

Gulf Coast hotel reservations are still at a standstill. The oil hasn't hit Pensacola Beach but neither are visitors. It has hotel owners worried that the peak season will be destroyed.

There's not a trace of oil on Pensacola Beach's white sand but also hardly any trace of reservations. People are keeping current bookings, but hardly anyone is calling for anything for the future.

"The pace of reservations going forward has basically gone to zero, we're not picking up any new reservations," said Julian MacQueen, the owner of Innisfree Hotels.

That's scary for MacQueen. He owns several hotels in Pensacola and Orange Beach.

"I think people are waiting. They're not canceling plans all together. They're waiting until later to make reservations. Wanting to know if this thing is being capped off, where the oil is, if there is any evidence of it. Just putting some hesitancy in their planning," MacQueen said.

A hesitancy that could damage the peak season of the Gulf Coast tourism industry. MacQueen's said his message is; it's not here, until it's here.

A Northwest Florida resort company, ResortQuest is putting up new pictures on their website daily of area beaches so visitors can see first hand what the area still looks like.
