Madonna becomes a benchmark for Hong Kong tourism

HONG KONG- Is Madonna really snubbing Hong Kong? The pop music icon recently turned down the offer of singing in the former British crown colony as she estimates that all the venues in the city are far too small for her.  The anecdote was reported by the South China Morning Post.

Entertainment mogul Peter Lam Kin-ngok highlighted the fact that Madonna found that current venues in town did not match expectation, despite the fact that Kim-ngok asked her to still sing.

Interestingly, Madonna disappointment is tuning into a strong adverting selling point for Hong Kong tourism industry. Madonna’s refusal to sing in Hong Kong is now used by Hong Kong new Tourism Board chairman  who is now asking the government to create a proper concert venue, centrally located. For now, the singer only stops for a series of performances in Japan.
According to Mr. Lam, the city lacks world-class venues to host international concerts and tournaments. The new governor is now looking to speed up the construction of a new facility. The current HKCEC (Hong Kong Convention Exhibition Center) can ‘only’ accommodate close to 4,000 delegates. By comparison, the China National Convention Center can accommodate between 5,700 and 6,000 delegates in the plenary hall. At least, Hong Kong people will in between admire, talk and even take a picture at Madame’s Tussaud own Madonna wax figure- if they cannot see the real one!
