Postcards out, Facebook in

24 Apr 2013  2082 | World Travel News

Long gone are the days when family and friends get the thrill of receiving a postcard from a distant land, hand signed by their loved one.

Today it might be more common to read "this beach rocks!" beneath a shot of wiggling toes on a sandy beach... again.

Only 27 percent of Australians and 29 percent of Kiwis unite the humble pen and paper when they are away, according to travel search site Skyscanner.

This is compared to over a third of Australians (37 percent) and Kiwis (39 percent) using Facebook to correspond with others about their trip, making this the third most preferred mode of communication.

Those waiting around at home are most likely to receive a text message from the traveller with 60 percent of Australians and 52 percent of Kiwis texting on their trip, with phone calls coming a close second as 43 percent of Australians and 50 percent of Kiwis pick up the phone.

There are a few, however that stay away from the Facebook limelight and only check their social media sites once a week, whilst others take it a step further and don't contact home at all (10 percent of Australians and 12 percent of Kiwis).
