The first sea-span bridge, Techo Morakot Bridge, to connect Sihanoukville province in Cambodia to Puos  or Snake Island in Sihanouk Bay was officially opened last week by Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Techo Morakot Bridge took three years to complete project at a cost of US$30 million.

The bridge was inaugurated 12 July and developed by China’s state-owned, Sinohydro Construction Corporation, which was also the main investor.

The 900-metres sea bridge connects Sihanoukville’s deep-sea port to a proposed luxury resort on Puos Island, which is owned by Koh Puos (Cambodia) Investment Group.

Puos Island located 900 metres off-shore was leased by the Cambodian government to the group in 2006. The company will invest US$300 million to develop the island as part of a 99-year lease.

Identified as Morakot (emerald) Island, the developer will sell luxury residential villas, apartments and build  five-star hotels for international groups to manage.

Prime minister Hun Sen said Sihanoukville was the third most important economic province after Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. The country is focusing on developing eco-tourism, agricultural and mining in four regions. (Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville and the Northeast.)

Sihanoukville is a province in southern Cambodia on the Gulf of Thailand, 185 km southwest of the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh.

The province has a domestic airport 17 km to the east of the main town. However, there are no commercial services to and from the airport.
