Myanmar’s state-owned, Myanma Airways, has called in foreign consultants for advice on how to expand its network and upgrade its organisation.
According to local media reports it has contacted aviation consultant, Avia Solution Group and US-based GE Capital Aviation Services which provides aircraft leasing services.
There has been a series of online video conference on how to bring the airline up speed to be able to compete in a regional market place.
Myanma Airways want to expand its network to serve ASEAN cities.
The airline’s managing director, Than Tun, was quoted as saying: “We are discussing with representatives of Avia Solution Group on a weekly basis.”
The airline is supposed to lease 10 Boeing 737s to begin its expansion phase.
The leasing contract was signed, 11 February, in Singapore. Under the contract, it will receive six Boeing 737-800s and four Boeing 737-8 Max aircraft between June 2015 to 2020.
The airline will also buy six ATR 72-600 aircraft for domestic services.
The state-owned airline was formed in September 1948 and has made most of its revenue by letting other airlines provide services in exchange for a share of equity or the payment of royalties. Since the 2013/2014 fiscal year the airline has started to fund its own expansion.
Currently, the airline flies to 26 towns in Myanmar with a fleet of nine aircraft – three ATR72s, one ATR42, three Beech 1900D and two Embraer 190. They also have two cargo planes; a MA 60 and a F28.
