KATHMANDU Nepal Airlines is expanding services between the Nepalese capital and Delhi, India, effective 1 May.
It hopes to capture a larger market share of traffic on the main trunk route between the two countries as flights are packed with tourists and commercial travellers.
Nepal’s tourism statistics show 798,000 tourists visited Nepal in 2013, representing a decline of 0.7%.
Indians visiting Nepal by air and land represented a market share of 21%.
inside no 7Nepal’s tourist arrivals by air reached 594,991, while overland trips stood at 202,768.
According to the ministry’s latest tourism statistics (2013), the top five tourism source markets were from India, China, the US, Thailand and the UK.
Nepal Airlines says it will increase flights to Delhi from daily to 10 flights weekly using new A320 aircraft exclusively, instead of a mix of A320s and Boeing 757s
The additional three flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, departing Kathmandu at 1500.
The existing daily services depart from Kathmandu at 0800.
Nepal Airlines is adding services to tap the boom in Asian travellers to the Himalayan nation. Delhi is viewed as the main gateway for Indian travellers, mainly wealthy families.
Bangkok and Singapore also serve as major gateways for international tourists visiting Nepal. Due to the growth in Chinese travel, Hong Kong has emerged as an important gateway prompting the airline to add a fourth service this May.
The additional service will operate on Sundays using a new A320.
