Japan retains reputation for punctuality

Japan’s airlines and airports are among the most reliable in the world in terms of flight punctuality, according to a new report.

Global aviation data company, OAG, revealed that Osaka‘s Itami Airport was one of the world’s best performing airports in 2014, while Japan Airlines was Asia Pacific region’s most punctual airline.

With 93.2% of its arrivals and departures occurring within 15 minutes of scheduled time, Osaka Airport led the whole world in terms of on-time performance in the mid-sized airport category. It was also the second best performing airport in the world, with only the UK’s Bristol Airport (94.4%) achieving a better on-time performance.

JAL meanwhile, managed to ensure that 88.8% of its flights arrived on time – the best of any airline in the Asia Pacific region and the ninth best in the world. airBaltic was the world’s most punctual airline in 2014 according to OAG’s data, with 94.9% of its flights arriving on time.

Other strong performers among the Japanese aviation industry include Tokyo Haneda Airport, which was the second best large airport in the world with a punctuality rating of 87.9%, and All Nippon Airways (ANA), which was the fourth most punctual airline in Asia Pacific (87.3%).

Australian aviation also performed well, according to OAG, with Adelaide (90.5%), Perth (88.1%), Brisbane (84.4%), Sydney (84.4%) and Melbourne (82.9%) doing well in the airport category, and Virgin Australia (85.5%) and Qantas (85.4%) both ranking in the Asia Pacific top 10.
