Japan’s two main airlines, ANA and JAL, posted strong sets of financial results for the 2014-15 financial year.
ANA achieved a 107.8% jump in net profits, to JPY39.2 billion (US$326 million) for the 12-month period. JAL meanwhile, generated an extremely strong net profit of JPY166.2bn (US$1.38bn), although this did mark a 17.2% decline compared to the previous financial year.
ANA’s total revenues increased 35.3% to JPY1.31 trillion, while ANA’s climbed 9.1% to JPY1.71trn.
In terms of traffic, ANA remains the stronger airline in the domestic market, carrying 43.2m passengers on intra-Japanese routes the 12 months to 31 March 2015, compared to JAL’s 31.6m. But JAL handled more passengers on international routes, with 7.8m compared to ANA’s 7.2m.
ANA is the larger of the two rivals in terms of fleet size, with 214 aircraft compared to JAL’s 163.
