YANGON A French-Italian aircraft manufacturer that builds ATRs plans to open an aircraft maintenance centre at Yangon International Airport.

Global New Light of Myanmar reported that there are no maintenance centres for detailed checks that must be carried out on the country’s fleet of ATRs  once they reach certain flying hour limits.

ATRs are a popular aircraft used by many of the country’s 11 airlines.

ATR 72-600 Myanmar National Airlines MSN 1267All the aircraft have to be flown to the nearest ATR centres in Singapore, or Malaysia, to be checked, the report added.

Major repairs are more expensive overseas costing USD500,000. A centre in Yangon could do the same work for USD100,000, but the challenge is finding skilled aircraft engineers, the newspaper claimed.

In 2014 Myanmar National Airlines and ATR signed an MoU for six of the aircraft and now an investment in a maintenance centre is understudy.
