AirAsia X took off to Beijing late last week on a high, with its inaugural flight to the city recording an average of 90 percent passenger load.

Currently flying between Beijing and Kuala Lumpur four times weekly, the airline expects to pick up the services to daily from 6 August this year – a rise ushered by the “ecstatic” and “encouraging” public response, the airline’s chief executive Azran Osman-Rani said.

Mr Osman-Rani added that the new service has also helped tourism in the destination, with passenger traffic to Beijing picking up an average of 80 percent over the next three months.

“With the additional flight frequencies from August 6 onwards, we foresee a strong growth trajectory of new segments of travellers between Malaysia, and South East Asia to Beijing and its surrounding regions and vice versa,” the chief said.

“Our entry into Beijing will indeed grow economic ties between Malaysia and China, particularly in tourism and trade, and enhance people to people exchange between the two countries.”

Beijing is the carrier’s seventh destination in China after Hangzhou, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chongqing and Guilin.

Earlier this week, the carrier’s parent company, AirAsia said it had no plans to return to India despite travel picking up in the country.
