BANGKOK Foreign visitors will pay more to visit to the Temple of the Reclining Buddha or Wat Pho starting 1 January next year.
According to the temple website, Wat Pho will double the entrance fee for foreigners from THB100 to THB200 effective from 1 January 2015 onward.
Children less than 120 cm (4 feet) tall enter free regardless of nationality. Thai citizens do not need to pay an entrance fee at any of the country’s historical temples.
inside no 3Wat Pho is a Buddhist temple in Phra Nakhon district, Bangkok, directly adjacent to the Grand Palace.
The temple is often called the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, but its official name is Wat Phra Chettuphon Wimon Mangkhlaram Ratchaworamahawihan.
The temple is also known as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage tuition. There is still school on the premises that teaches massage techniques.
It is one of the largest and oldest temples in Bangkok (with an area of 50 rai, 80,000 square metres) and is home to more than one thousand Buddha images, as well as one of the largest single Buddha images 160 feet in length: the Reclining Buddha.
The temple was considered the first public university of Thailand, teaching students in the fields of religion, science and literature through murals and sculptures. In 1962 a school for traditional medicine and massage was established.
Traditional Thai massage and medicine is taught at the Traditional Medical Practitioners Association Centre, an open air hall outside the temple.
For Thai massage therapists, the medical inscription inside the temple acts as a base for treatment.
