A prime example of their connections with local community is seen through the Community Partnerships programme run by Hotel de La Paix in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Unlike many international hotels that remain insulated from the local community, Hotel de la Paix actively supports and encourages the interaction of guests with the surrounding environment. Visitors are invited to connect with local Khmer families in a dignified way, fostering cross-cultural understanding and sensitivity through tourism. The hotel runs a number of community-based sponsorships for which its guests and the public can get involved.
The Hotel de La Paix Sewing Centre is located in the grounds of Wat Damnak and overseen by the monks of the Life & Hope Association. The centre provides a ten month sewing training course to young disadvantaged Khmer women from rural communities with few job opportunities. Students are not only taught sewing skills, but also attend daily English lessons, develop basic life skills and are taught to read and write Khmer script. Upon graduation from the programme, each student is provided with a sewing machine and start-up kit so they can return to their village and run their own business; thereby giving them a bright future in which they can be gainfully employed.
The hotel also supports customized community-based activities such as rice sponsorship, education, donations of water wells, pushbikes, school uniforms and supplies. Individual tailored contributions and long-term sponsorships are arranged for guests by the hotel.
