According to Round the World Experts, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos are proving increasingly popular with travellers.
Group marketing manager Brett Warbrick explained that old favourites like Australia and New Zealand are also high on most explorers'' lists - as is South America.
The expert noted that Brits should establish what it is they want to get from their gap year or extended break before they leave.
"Once you know the type of experience you want, you should then talk to an expert to work out the best itinerary and budget to suit your needs," he said.
Mr Warbrick added that many travel specialists have been to the places where their customers wish to go and can offer first-hand advice and insight into the destinations that they won''t find in guidebooks or brochures.
