Google rolls out Street View to Cambodia

PHNOM PENH Google introduces its Street View image-collecting project for Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and more than 10 other provinces in Cambodia.
Launched late last week, Steet View will allow users to navigate 360-degree images of streets, markets and landmarks in the cities and provinces.
Users can explore Phnom Penh’s Wat Phnom, Royal Palace gardens and the majority of the city’s streets and markets. They can also enter and explore the multiple corridors of the city’s central market.
Outside of Phnom Penh, there are views of attractions in Stung Treng, Kratie, Ratanakkiri, Mondolkiri, Kompong Thom, Kompong Cham, Tbong Khmum, Kep, Kampot, Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey provinces.
In Kratie, users can enter the 100 Pillars Pagoda, while in Mondolkiri, they can view Bou Sra waterfall. In Kampot, users can climb Bokor Mountain and view Sampov Pram Pagoda. In Kompong Cham, they can explore Wat Nokor temple.
The imagery has been collected over the past year by cars equipped with panoramic camera gear and by individuals wearing specialised camera-mounted backpacks.
Google product manager, Divon Lan, said: “We all hope the Street View imagery in Cambodia will create new ways for people around the world to experience Cambodia, and by doing so, help create better awareness of this country and attract more tourism.”
Ministry of Tourism’s marketing and promotion department director, So Visothy, said Google’s latest project in the country would attract tourists and motivate them to visit the country.
“It’s like a guide, because when they arrive here, they can find attractions and easily move from place to place. It will increase international and domestic tourism because everyone can search and share places.”
The project comes after Google launched an interactive map of Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap in April, allowing users to explore more than 100 temples, including Angkor Wat, through panoramic images.
According to Google, Street View blurs faces and other identifying characteristics such as licence plates. The company said it is also “extremely responsive” to requests from individuals for further blurring of images.
