Opening on August 6, 2009, the collection of artwork combines two divergent execution of a theme but shares an uncanny bond that explores emotions and psychology in such revealing light.
In a series depicting Khmer women in various stages of waiting, Qudy Xu, paints a nostalgic and familiar scene without revealing a catharsis or resolution to the subject?s dilemma. You will be confronted with a portrait that questions back rather than give answers, ?What or who is she waiting for? Why is she waiting?? She injects drama into her pictures pregnant with meaning.
Tith Kanitha on the other hand explores the other end of the spectrum by abstracting the depiction of the concept. Her mix media artworks using colored wire balls attached to canvas is sometimes playful while others almost tribal with graphic lines and square filling up the whole canvas space. The meditative and almost obsessive rendition constitutes the amount of time the pieces were done while ?waiting?. The manifestations of her ?waiting? are the pieces she?s showing.
Qudy Xu, born in Fu Jian, China, is a self taught artist living in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. She began exhibiting her works in 2007 with local and international artists there. She was also part of the Selapak Neari program established in 2008 and funded by Arts Network Asia in Singapore. One of her pieces in the ?Wait? series got nominated for the 2009 Sovereign Asian Art Prize.
Tith Kanitha was also part of the Selapak Neari program, a women arts group. She has joined many group exhibits like ?The Art of Survival 1&2?, after graduating from the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh. She also dabbled in film documentary acting as research assistant for John Pirozzi?s ?Cambodian Rock &Rolls1960-70? for DTIF Production.
?Waiting? at the Arts Lounge of Hotel de la Paix is exhibited until September 2009.
