Construction work for the expansion of the Stung Hav International Seaport in Preah Sihanouk province has yet to begin, with the companies behind the project still working on the feasibility study, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

The Stung Hav International Seaport is owned by Stung Hav Special Economic Zone, a sister company to Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone.

The goal is to expand the depth of the port from 6 to 12 metres to allow bigger ships to dock. The project is a joint cooperation of Phnom Penh Economic Zone and Metallurgical Corporation of China Ltd, a group under the supervision and control of the Chinese government, and one of the longest running iron and steel construction enterprises in the country.

A framework for cooperation in the project between the Cambodian and Chinese governments was signed during Chinese premier Li Keqiang’s state visit to the Kingdom in January.

Va Simsorya, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, confirmed to Khmer Times that the project is still in the initial stages of development, with the companies involved still working on the feasibility study.

“Investors have requested a feasibility study for the project, and that’s what the companies are working on now,” he said, adding that he was unsure when the study will be ready and when construction is due to start.
