In a move to bring technology to the rural areas and boost the development of the local agricultural sector, India will set up a digital village in Cambodia, the Indian Ambassador to Cambodia announced this week.

Ambassador Manika Jain said on Monday that the project will be a new landmark in the already excellent cooperation between the two nations in information and communication technology (ICT).

Her announcement came after a meeting with the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Tram Iv Tek.

She said India’s Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL) will be an advisor to the project.

Im Vutha, spokesman for the Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia, said yesterday that TCIL visited Cambodia last month to conduct a number of feasibility studies related to the project.

“They have already selected Traing district in Takeo for the Digital Village project,” he said.

According to Mr Vutha, TCIL will set up an ICT centre in the district. “The idea is for people to gain access to the most up-to-date information available on farming techniques and on the market,” he said.
