Train carriages from Mexico reach port

The shuttle service connecting Phnom Penh centre with the airport will soon be upgraded with new carriages imported from Mexico, according to the service manager.

Royal Railways, the company that manages the country’s railway network, said the three carriages arrived at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port on Tuesday, and Transport Minister Sun Chanthol said they will be put into service “soon”.

“We have been waiting for these carriages for months, and now they have finally arrived, so we will have an official launch soon and request Prime Minister Hun Sen to preside over it,” Mr Chanthol said.

Mr Chanthol, however, did not give a specific date for the launch.

Although they were imported to be used in Phnom Penh’s airport shuttle, he said one of the carriages may also be used in the southern rail line – connecting the capital with Sihanoukville – or the western rail line – which reaches Poipet, in the border with Thailand.
