The 20th ASEAN Summit Ends Successfully

The 20th ASEAN Summit, with the theme of “ASEAN: One Community, One Destiny” held in Phnom Penh, on April 3-4 under the chairmanship of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, concluded successfully.

“The Heads of State/Government of ASEAN Member States had substantive, frank and productive discussions in plenary and retreat sessions,” said the Chairman’s Statement of the 20th ASEAN Summit released this afternoon.

The ASEAN Leaders supported the priorities outlined by Cambodia during its Chairmanship in 2012 and agreed to work together based on the priorities to accelerate the building of the ASEAN Community by 2015 and to ensure the achievements of the ASEAN Community beyond 2015, it said.

United under the theme of “ASEAN: One Community, One Destiny,” the ASEAN Leaders affirmed their strong commitment to intensify their work towards an integrated, connected, people-centred and rules-based region as well as a prosperous ASEAN, said the statement.

The ASEAN Leaders will continue to encourage the participation of their people and all stakeholders of ASEAN in the community-building process, based on the Roadmap for an ASEAN Community, 2009-2015, it added.

During the two-day summit, the ASEAN Leaders agreed and adopted the Phnom Penh Declaration on ASEAN: One Community, One Destiny; the Phnom Penh Agenda on ASEAN Community Building; the ASEAN Leaders’ Declaration on Drug-Free ASEAN 2015; and the ASEAN Concept Paper on Global Movement of Moderates.

The ASEAN member countries are Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
