Phnom Penh Municipality has launched a new campaign to rid the city?s streets of rubbish, with new regulations designed to punish people who litter due to come into force in May, municipal officials said yesterday. Deputy Governor Mann Chhoeun said yesterday that the municipal department wanted the city to be clean and ?most beautiful? for its residents. ?We are discussing to keep garbage cans on the road... to keep rubbish in order,? Mr Chhoeun said. People who throw rubbish away in the city?s parks will be targeted when the new regulations come into place, Mr Chhoeun said. Street and market vendors will also be encouraged to separate their wet, dry and plastic rubbish. Pa Socheatevong, another deputy governor, confirmed that the new regulations will include fines for litterers. ?We will fine [those] who throw the rubbish,? Mr Socheatevong said. Chak Srey, a worker for Phnom Penh garbage collection company Cintri, said a lot of people lacked education and ?threw their garbage anywhere.? ?I am very happy for the government to fine people who threw something,? Ms Srey said.
