Liaoning province, located in Northeastern China, is seeking sister province status with Cambodia’s Preah Sihanouk, according to Chen Qiufa, secretary of China’s Communist Party and governor of Liaoning province.

Plans to link the provinces through sisterhood were revealed Wednesday by Mr Quifa, who is now in Cambodia leading a Chinese delegation, during a meeting with Cambodian Commerce Minister Pan Sorasak.

“This sort of partnership would play a critical role in developing the manufacturing sector and tightening ties between the provinces,” he said, adding that, as part of the sisterhood, a new special economic zone would be built – the Liaoning-Cambodia Industrial Park.

Mr Quifa requested the minister’s support for the project, adding that it is in line with the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Minister Sorasak pledged support for the project. “It will help generate more jobs and increase income for locals, while boosting the province’s development,” he said.

According to World Bank’s latest report, Preah Sihanouk is at the centre of a construction boom in the country, which is being financed largely by investment from China.
