A Qantas flight, 90 minutes into its journey towards Sydney was forced to return to New Zealand yesterday, after a ‘suspicious item’ was found on board.

Passengers were forced to evacuate the aircraft after its arrival at Auckland Airport, before a police bomb squad moved in to remove the piece from the Boeing 737, ABC News reported.

A Qantas spokesperson said the aircraft landed safely, without incident or an emergency landing.

According to a police statement, the suspicious item “turned out to be part of the interior of the aircraft that is not normally visible”.
