Spain Tourism industry fears drop in tourists after Catalonia Bullfighting Ban. Spain Tourism feels that Catalonia Bullfighting ban would affect tourists arrivals as bullfighting plays vital role in tourism.
Tourism Industry accepts that bullfighting is a brutal sport but banning it completely would affect tourism industry. At time when Spain is going through tough economic times and tourism industry is on all time low, banning bullfighting is not smart move.
These reactions came after Catalonia became the first Spain mainland region to ban bullfighting to support animal rights. Lawmakers in Catalonia parliament approved the ban 68-55. The ban will take effect from 2012.
Tourism industry feels that this decision will affect tourists arrivals especially in Barcelona, one of the most popular destination in Spain. Thousands of people come to watch bullfighting in Spain, this ban would take away these tourists from Spain.
On the other hand supporters of the ban feels that it would boost tourism since thousands of people who supports animal rights have avoid traveling to Catalonia due to the ban. There are thousands of people on Social Networking Sites like Twitter and Facebook who have supported the ban and express desire to travel Catalonia after the ban takes place.
Some supporters also says that bullfighting is not as popular in Catalonia as some other regions of Spain. Popularity of bullfighting in Catalonia has dropped over the years and so does the numbers of tourists coming to watch it. Therefore it was good decision to ban bullfighting.
Many Experts believe that ban would not affect tourism in Spain as other regions in the country still allows bullfighting but feels that Catalonia might lose tourists to other regions of Spain.
