Travellers should adopt Thainess

BANGKOK  Tourists visiting Thailand should adopt a behaviour that is compatible with the ‘Thainess’ concept, Association of Domestic Travel former president, Maiyarat Pheerayakoses told a gathering of tourism experts last week.
She called on the government to act to improve tourist behaviour without giving details how that could be achieved.
The comments were made at a high-powered seminar “Moving Thailand Tourism Forward” attended by Thailand’s top tourism planners.
“We focus on Thainess, however, we let tourists to do what they want particularly at beach destinations…there is too much freedom…so how can the government control this issue.”
inside no 5Deputy PM, Pridiyathorn Devakula, who was attending the seminar noted: “This is a sensitive issue that we need to do step-by-step beginning with Thai people providing accurate information on the dos and don’ts of Thainess to preserve our country’s dignity.”
It would also require Thais to set a good example and live their lives according to the Thainess principle. As an example If Thainess was adopted, rather than given lip-service, there would be fewer road accidents as Thais would act in a considerate, caring manner when driving, hallmark feature of Thainess.
Comments quickly moved on to financial matters, clearly a subject that is closer to the hearts of tourism leaders.
Tourism Council of Thailand former president and Thai Hotels Association advisor, Piyaman Techapaibul, called on the government to pay attention to the subject of reducing loan interest for hoteliers and to crack down on illegal hotels.
To develop the hotel sector, Pridiyathorn advised: “Hoteliers should talk and discuss together to find way sto set hotel prices at the same level and how to not cut and dump rates competing head-on with each other.”
He also urged the hotel private sector to inform the government of the number of illegal hotels so action could be taken.
Software Industry Promotion Agency board committee, Suwadee Pachariyangkun, suggested the government establish a data tank for tourism information to distribute information to travellers.
“Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and Ministry of Tourism and Sports should work together to develop tourism information and set up a strong intelligence centre for the sector.”
