Laos builds a bridge to Mekong Island

Construction of a bridge to Done Khong Island, the biggest island in Mekong River is now underway.Today, Done Khong Island is served by ferries that ply the river from towns and villages. It is part of the Si Phan Don or Four Thousands Islands in Mekong River located in southern Laos.

In term of tourism, it is the gateway to Khone Phapheng Falls and usually visited on the way to Cambodia.KPL Lao News Agency reported bridge construction would cost US$34 million. The project kicked off earlier this month and should be completed by mid-2014.

Head of Don Kong Bridge Construction Project, Khamhoung Nouphasay, told local press the US$34 million bridge would be financed jointly by the Lao Government and a loan from the Chinese government.The Donkhong Bridge project will span 718.8 metres from a point near Hard village to Houai village, Khone district. This bridge is designed to have two 4-metre wide lanes and a 3-metre sidewalk.
