Airports will serve as special shopping escapades for both international and local airline passengers in Malaysia, Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit said today. He said the idea -- mooted by the Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad (MAHB) -- was to give tourists a new shopping experience."Airports offer an alternative shopping destination and micro view of the Malaysian experience.
"It is the first and last touch point for visitors to the country," he said when launching the Malaysia Mega Sale of Sarawak at the Kuching International Airport here Saturday.Dawos said the KLIA 2, the new permanent Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), would be the biggest shopping airport in the world when it opens in October, next year.
"KLIA 2, which could have more than 200 outlets, will attract high-spending tourists and boost the tourism revenue," he said.Meanwhile, MAHB chairman Tan Sri Dr Aris Othman said the move to position airports as a new shopping experience was in tandem with MAHB's overall Airport Commercial Model initiative.
