In an effort to promote Sarawak and its attractions across the globe, the state is looking at further promoting its golf tourism sector as it has a number of top class golf courses.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said Sarawak needs to look into having a signature golf championship of international stature, the Borneo Post reported.
“The return of investment of organising such international class golfing event is tremendous,” Mr Shabery said.
“Sports tourism events always get good support from my ministry and the various tourism bodies.
Mr Shabery said companies such as CIMB Bank and Malayan Banking get behind sponsoring international class golf tournaments in Malaysia.
“The government can facilitate in the organisation of world class golf tournaments in Malaysia,” Mr Shabery confirmed.
Mr Shabery added golfers are always searching for new experiences and Sarawak has many unique attractions to showcase.
“I have played golf at Damai Golf and also at Kelab Golf Sarawak, Damai Golf is very scenic and has better potential for golf tourism.”
“The state must promote Damai Golf more as the exposure is good for the state,” Mr Shabery added.
According to recent studies an overseas golf tourist is worth three times the value of the average tourist as they usually spend more money.
Mr Shabery explains the value of sports tourism to the country is RM5billion annually therefore the state government needs to take a look at promoting sports golf tourism.
