The Tourism Ministry of Malaysia launched the Malaysia Green Malaysia Clean campaign (MGMC), with the objective of preserving Malaysia’s natural beauty and promoting cleanliness, especially at tourist attractions.
“To achieve this objective, the ministry is taking the lead by establishing and promoting cleanliness as a standard for Malaysia as our country strives to maintain its position in the top 10 list of the most visited countries in the world,” said Minister of Tourism YB Dato’ Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen. The campaign is a part of the Ministry of Tourism’s effort to receive 36 million arrivals annually by 2020. Last year, more than 27 million people traveled to Malaysia.
Kuala Lumpur, the capital, was the seventh most traveled to city in the world in 2010, according to Euromonitor International.
Recent programs under the initiative include encouraging tourists to plant a tree at ministry-registered homestays; activities promoting the campaign at local tourism events; collaborating with private sector, media and non-governmental organizations to provide cleanliness and environmental awareness programs; and television programs for children featuring the campaign mascot “Mr. Bin” to create awareness among children on the importance of keeping the environment clean.
