The first phase of the Techo International Airport (TIA) is now over 96 percent complete in construction as of mid-May, costing about $1.6 billion, while the company is accelerating the remaining construction works to prepare for commencement on July 10.

Sinn Chanserey Vutha, Secretary of State and Spokesperson of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), shared the updates yesterday, citing that the remaining works involve decorating, decorating, installing signs, etc.

A meeting to produce a final report is scheduled to be held in late May or early June 2025 to review and assess the second phase of the airport construction work, he said.

Speaking to Khmer Times, Vutha said, “The construction is almost completed. If nothing changes, July 10 is the target timeframe that the relevant parties have planned to put the Techo International Airport into commencement.”

Located about 20 kilometers south of Phnom Penh in Kandal and Takeo provinces, the 2,600-hectare facility, the airport in the first phase would have capacity to serve over 15 million passengers annually.

The Cambodian government holds 10 percent of the shares through the SSCA while the remaining 90 percent of the shares are held by the local conglomerate Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC).

In the second phase, the addition of a second runway will increase passenger capacity to 30 million by 2030.

As planned, Prime Minister Hun Manet will preside over the inauguration of the airport.

The Premier has earlier said the airport was at the centre of a strategy to connect the economic activity and development in the southwestern parts of the country, which include the provinces of Kandal, Takeo, Kampot and Kep.

According to the Secretary of State, as planned, Phnom Penh International Airport, currently in operation and under the Cambodia Airports, will be closed at 00:00 midnight on July 9, 2025, as all operations will be moved entirely to the Techo International Airport.

Korean Air would be the last flight to the Phnom Penh International Airport before its shutdown of operation on July 10 onward, according to SSCA.
